Letter, 27 July 1847, Canton, [China] to his father re: his arrival in Hong Kong after a 136 day journey, mentioning other Baptist missionaries there including William Dean, [Samuel C.] Clopton, and [Issachar Jacob] Roberts, and the plundering of Roberts' house and chapel; Letter, [1847], addressed to his father but written to his family's African American slaves Aunt Maria, Phoebe, and Phillis thanking them for their obedience to his family, reminding Maria that her faithfulness to her worldly masters is the will of God, and imploring Phoebe and Phillis "to improve what days the Mercy of God gives you to repent in, and to seek the salvation of your soul[s]."
